ABC RN response to SAVE RN Music email

I'm impressed they responded to my email within 30 minutes and inserted my name into their template response.

Very UNimpressed nobody took the time to read what I'd written. It wasn't more of the same.
Just more bureaucrats who are card-carryling members of The Value Prevention Society.

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your email.

We acknowledge the importance of serving our current audiences. But we must also ensure that RN continues to contribute to and to shape Australian cultural and intellectual life into the future. In meeting this goal we are focusing on the value of our rich and distinctive spoken-word audio, long form text and digital content, and our ability to deliver it to more people than ever before. We want new audiences who are not currently experiencing RN content to discover it in an environment of greater media choice and fragmentation. We are committed to preparing ABC Radio to entertain and inform the next generations of audio listeners as well as its existing audiences.

We also routinely make changes to refresh and enrich our program and presenter line-ups – something that all media organisations undertake on an ongoing basis – and with the annual commissioning of new programs and content comes the decommissioning of others. We understand that not all of our programming changes will be to every listener’s preference, and we’re sorry that you are disappointed by this decision.

The origins of RN’s music programming pre-dates a lot of the ABC’s current music offer. With this in mind, the decision to decommission The Inside Sleeve, The Live Set, Daily Planet and The Rhythm Divine has been made in context of ABC’s broader music stations: ABC Classic FM, Classic 2, ABC Jazz, ABC Country, triple j, triple j Unearthed and newly expanded Double J. The Music Show will remain on RN, presented by Andrew Ford and providing quality coverage relating to the creation and enjoyment of music. Beyond that, music will also be discussed and played on our popular local radio stations in the capital cities and on our regional network.

For those who live outside terrestrial radio or television coverage, the VAST satellite service provides access to ABC television as well as many ABC radio services, including all of the dedicated music services listed above. We are aware of our responsibility to serve Australians in rural and regional areas as well as in cities and towns. Providing services across a range of different platforms allows us to reach the widest possible audience across the country and we do not believe it discriminates against rural listeners.

The ABC continues to support Australian music in its many varied forms and looks forward to a strong year in music in 2017. We have endeavoured to address any further concerns in detail here.

Regards,
